'Are you looking forward to see India?'
If you want to drive me crazy, you have to send me a message like this.
Just a quick flashback. Maybe you guys remember Jessika and Sanal still. That very nice couple whose Dutch-Indian engagement I was allowed to photograph a while ago. What a beautiful day that was! After I delivered the photos, I soon received an enthusiastic email from Jessika and Sanal. There was some more emailing back and forth, and then suddenly there was the sentence that made my heart beat faster. 'Are you looking forward to see India?'. What? India? I had already heard quite a few stories from my girlfriend, who had already visited the country a number of times. It was really (sorry for the unbelievable cliché!) a dream to be able to photograph a wedding abroad. And of course such a fascinating country as India is high on the list. Before I knew it I had booked a ticket. Fortunately, applying for a visa was also a piece of cake.
Halfway through November the time had finally come. Get up early, take the car to Brussels to catch my flight there. But then…..traffic jam! Incredible, long, barely moving traffic jam. What a disaster! The extra hour of travel time I had factored in flew by. Finally, I reached my parking spot with screeching tires and had to wait far too long for the bus that took me to the terminal. Running to the counter, and with my heart in my throat and out of breath, I asked the gentleman from Etihad: “I would like to check in.”. A silence of a second or two seemed to last an eternity. “Sir, check-in is unfortunately closed.” This couldn't be true... I stood there somewhat bewildered. And now?
The employee asked about the papers I had in my hands. “But sir, I see that you have already checked in. Come here quickly with that backpack and you can still come!”. Checking in online the night before saved me. What a relief! An hour or so later my flight left for Abu Dhabi, and from there I flew to Mumbai. There I met my girlfriend, who had to book a later flight. And from Mumbai the trip went to Goa, from where we would first travel around for a few weeks. The big, fat icing on the cake was Jessika and Sanal's wedding. It was hot, busy, hectic, sweating, running, but it was worth it. And a major typhoon almost threw a spanner in the works a few days earlier - during the planned 'pool party' with the wedding guests - which caused severe weather in the area.
In any case, no one will take the following photo series away from me anymore:
